According to myth, Bloodstone was first formed when drops of Christ's blood fell and stained some jasper at the foot of the cross. Bloodstone can be found almost anywhere in the world, but major sources include India, Brazil, China, Australia, and the United States. Sometimes also referred to as 'heliotrope', perhaps because it resembled the red setting sun, or 'martyr’s stone’ because Medieval Christians often used it to carve scenes of the crucifixion. Bloodstone is green jasper dotted with bright red spots of iron oxide that suggest spots of blood. Bloodstone jewellery is thought to be beneficial for the circulation of all energy in the body and helps to remove energy blocks as well as improving the circulation of blood and even today, finely pulverised Bloodstone is used as a medicine and aphrodisiac in India. Bloodstone is a semi-precious gemstone for the zodiac sign of Aries (March 22-April 20).
