Chemically speaking, Howlite is a calcium borosilicate hydroxide mineral and was discovered at Tick Canyon, California in 1868 by Canadian geologist and mineralogist Henry How. Howlite is usually white with fine grey or black veins in a web-like pattern, although it can also be found in green and blue variants. It’s quite opaque and can have a generous lustre. Its porous texture means it can be easily dyed to imitate other minerals, especially turquoise, and consequently Howlite is also sometimes called ‘white turquoise’ or ‘white buffalo turquoise’.
