Ruby
Burma (Miramar) is the most important source of ruby today. Other producers are the island of Sri Lanka, Thailand, Kampuchea, India and Australia. Ruby (from the Latin meaning ‘red’) is a pink to blood-red gemstone quality corundum. Ruby’s red colour is caused by the presence of chromium and without this element other varieties of gem-quality corundum are called sapphires. Ruby jewellery is treasured because ruby is considered one of the four precious stones, together with the sapphire, the emerald, and the diamond. Ruby is a semi-precious gemstone for the zodiac sign of Gemini (May 22-June 21).
