Amazonite
This little known gemstone is mined throughout the world in Brazil, Zimbabwe, Madagascar, Australia, Russia, Namibia and the USA. It can be iridescent and colour ranges anywhere from pale green to pale blue. It gets its name from the belief that this gemstone originally came from the Amazon River in South America. Amazonite jewellery can feature different shades of these colours in the same gemstone. Other examples can be a beautiful deep blue/green colour with white stripes. Amazonite is formed entirely naturally in granite rocks and Amazonite jewellery is usually set as a cabochon because the gemstone breaks easily if faceted. Amazonite is a semi-precious stone for the month of August and the zodiac sign of Virgo (Aug 22-Sep 22).
